The
new album of quintette of Pittsburgh Salsamba, "The Traveler",
is a pure wonder! (Clave Records. www.salsamba.com <http://www.salsamba.com>
). It is true that his leader, the guitarist Eric Susoeff had
got us used to recordings of high quality. The disc is full of
the musical feelings of Coltrane, Bird, Cal Tjader, Monk, Ellington
and Ray Bryant - three pianistes for a group without piano. As
his name indicates it the album travels between several rhythms of the
Caribbean and Brazil as well as the mambo, the cha cha cha, the guanguanco,
the soca, the baiao and some big masters of the jazz. One is far
of a simple latinisation of standard ones. Salsamba has developed
a special sound, using the guitar, the absence of piano, original arrangements
of Susoeff and to the constant practice of group. One notes it
for example in the interpretation of Cubano Chant, a composition of
Ray Bryant popularized by the vibraphoniste Cal Tjader; or again in
the original ones of Susoeff as Mambo #20, constructs on blues, or the
delicately funky Way of the Serene. Among the themes more interesting,
26-2, a theme of Coltrane inspired by Confirmation of Charlie Parker,
here interpreted with the rhythms of the rumba, yesa, afrocubaine and
mambo - with a fine solo on congas by George Jones also soloing well
on Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are, by Monk. A remarkable album of
a remarkable group , alas one too little known!
