Salsamba, the Latin jazz quintet led by guitarist Eric Susoeff, has just released its fourth recording, a CD titled "The Traveler."

Featured artists are: Eric Susoeff, guitar; George Jones, conga; John Rampolla, drums; Paul Thompson, bass; Eric DeFade, saxophones and flute and special guest Kenia, the Brazilian vocalist.

The recording, done at Heid Studios, features a satisfying choice of tunes ranging from jazz classics to Susoeff originals. The CD starts off with a burning rendition of Coltrane’s "26-2." The original tune was loosely based on Charlie Parker’s "Confirmation". Salsamba goes a step further to imbed in its arrangement a reference to Thelonius Monk’s "Evidence". The mambo and yeza rhythms infuse the track with excitement under solos by the tenor sax, guitar and conga.

Continuing with the tribute to Monk is the band’s rendition of "BA-LUE BOLIVAR BA-LUES-ARE."
This funky cha-cha has the same soloists as the first track.

The title cut is an original by Susoeff. The soca rhythm provides a percolating island groove, inspired by his travels to St. John, Belize and Costa Rica. Tenor sax and guitar solo on this track. "Curacao" was composed by Latin jazz great Cal Tjader in a 6/8 rhythm. Salsamba finishes out its arrangement with an exciting tag as the soprano sax and guitar trade off riffs. Eric Susoeff composed "Green Forest´ to celebrate a local Brazilian restaurant where members of the band have enjoyed many delicious meals.

This bossa nova features DeFade’s chops on the flute and Paul Thompson’s facility with acoustic bass. Acoustic guitar further evokes the sounds and sensuality of Brazil. Cal Tjader made the next tune famous, but Ray Bryant composed "Cubano Chant". With this track, Salsamba acknowledges its debt to the traditions of Latin jazz. The arrangement offers solos by tenor sax and guitar, with conga and timbale trading measures to spice things up.
The quintet’s special guest, Kenia, adds her unmistakable Brazilian flair to the tune "Feminina". Vocalist Joyce penned this lively tune, based on a baion rhythm. In this arrangement, accented with flute and guitar, Kenia shows off her ability to scat.

Duke Ellington’s "African Flower" is interpreted by the band using an exotic, modal approach over a modified bolero rhythm. The Guitar solos on the tune and the soprano sax solos over a long tag ending. The next three tracks were compositions by Susoeff. "Mambo #20" explores the minor blues form. Flute, guitar and conga are the featured instruments. "Chant" uses a guaguanco rhythm and has a chant-like melody. "Way of the Serene" is a Latin funk tune that gives Paul Thompson on bass another chance to shine.

The recording wraps up with another Monk tune, "Epistrophy." Salsamba latinizes this jazz classic with mambo & mozambique rhythms.
Solos are conga, tenor sax and guitar.

"The Traveler" truly takes the listener on a journey through the rhythms and traditions of Latin jazz. It’s a trip any music lover will enjoy.
